The words ‘safari’ and ‘luxury’ may seem an unlikely pairing but combining the wildlife and adventure of Africa’s safaris with
a stay in some of its most sumptuous and lavish lodges and clubs makes
for a unique retreat. Spend your days spotting the country’s varied
species amongst the beautiful terrain, and the evenings dining out on
local food, enjoying a massage or taking a dip in the pool.
The safari holiday is for couples with a passion for
wildlife and the great outdoors, and also makes for an alternative
honeymoon destination. Here are Exec Digital’s ultimate safaris for the
adventurous executive:
Cliff Lodge, Ulusaba
Sir Richard Branson’s private game reserve epitomizes safari
luxury. Located in the western sector of the Sabi Sand Reserve, it is
close to Kruger National Park. Twice daily game drives allow visitors
to track the surrounding wildlife.
As its name suggests, Cliff Lodge is perched atop a lush cliff,
offering spectacular panoramas of the bush. The Lodge comprises two
suites; one with its own private pool and the other with a Jacuzzi.
Hire of either suite includes your own chef and private vehicle for
game drives. Come night, why not leave the stylish comfort of the Lodge
for a stargazing expedition.
Travel: The reserve is one hour and 20 minutes from OR Tambo
International Airport, and 30 minutes from Kruger Mpumalanga
International Airport. From there, get a flight to the reserve, which
has its own private airstrip.

Singita Sasakawa Lodge, Tanzania
Sitting in 340,000 acres of the Singita Grumeti Reserve, Singita
Sasakawa Lodge is in the style of an Edwardian manor house, complete
with stately furniture, silverware and ornamental pieces. Each of the
nine cottages in the lodge contains four poster beds and infinity
pools, as well as a veranda with Swarovski spotting scope. If you’re
taking the family, then The Villa contains a basement nanny flat with
two twin bedrooms, in addition to four bedrooms.
The spa provides the perfect retreat in the wilds of Africa,
whether your idea of pampering is a cleansing facial or relaxing
massage, therapists can offer personalized therapies and treatments.
Meanwhile, the Equestrian Centre gives skilled riders the opportunity
to enjoy out-rides on the Serengeti Plains.
For the ultimate view of the plains though, a balloon safari across the Serengeti is highly recommended.
Travel: Daily flights from Arusha.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, Kenya
The majestic Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club was founded by
movie star William Holden and has played host to politicians and
Hollywood’s elite. The 120 rooms offer an elegant space in which to
take in the manicured grounds and Mount Kenya itself. Accommodation
comes in the form of Fairmont and Deluxe rooms, suites and cottages.
If this all seems far removed from the surrounding Kenyan
wildlife, then take the opportunity to participate in horseback riding,
golf, croquet, swimming and bowling. If you want to step outside the
grounds, then guided game walks in the Forest Reserve are recommended.
Alternatively, join the fishing safari, the excursion to Aberdare
National Park or the trip to an exclusive game ranch.
Dining is a formal affair at the Club but one not to be missed.
The Mawingo Dining Room offers a gourmet, nine course menu, while the
bars and lounges provide a more relaxed atmosphere.
Travel: The Club recommends flying with Air Kenya Aviation
